What it is, and where it comes from
Viognier is a northern Rhône grape variety, not a native Tuscan grape. In April 2024, Gambero Rosso published a list of the ten best Italian Viogniers under twenty euros, and among them was Isola 2022 from Fattoria Uccelliera.
That a family farm from the Pisan hills ends up on a national list with that particular grape variety says two things: that experimentation happens here, and that the result holds its own beyond the province. Tuffaceous and siliceous soils, between eighty and two hundred meters; manual harvest and minimal intervention in the cellar.

Who makes it, and where
Fattoria Uccelliera, in Crespina Lorenzana.
Made on the Pisan hills.
Two hundred and forty hectares between Crespina Lorenzana and Fauglia, twenty-one of them vineyard and olive grove.
“Uccelliera” is a medieval place name: it marked the hill where an old bird-catching stand once stood, a set-up for taking migrating birds. Today that same piece of hill does the opposite, and the arable land is farmed with the wildlife that passes through in mind.
