This wine

What it is, and where it comes from

Ficaia is the estate's white hillside wine. It grows on the predominantly tuffaceous and siliceous soils of the estate, with some clayey areas, between eighty and two hundred meters above sea level: below, the fossil coral reef of over one million years.

On the white wines, the more experimental side of the winery is more evident than elsewhere. The house method remains the same: manual harvesting, selection of grapes in the field, minimal intervention, with fermentation temperature as the main lever.

The farm

Who makes it, and where

Fattoria Uccelliera, in Crespina Lorenzana.

Made on the Pisan hills.

Two hundred and forty hectares between Crespina Lorenzana and Fauglia, twenty-one of them vineyard and olive grove.

“Uccelliera” is a medieval place name: it marked the hill where an old bird-catching stand once stood, a set-up for taking migrating birds. Today that same piece of hill does the opposite, and the arable land is farmed with the wildlife that passes through in mind.
