This wine

What it is, and where it comes from

Syrah is a Rhône grape, not a native Tuscan variety. Planting it on the Pisan hills is a choice, not a tradition: what makes this wine Tuscan is the hills and the way they are worked.

This is the same winery that vinifies Sangiovese as a white wine and sets aside fifteen hectoliters for a single selection: here, experimentation is openly declared. Manual harvest, grape selection in the vineyard, minimal intervention, with fermentation temperature and skin contact time as the only levers.

The farm

Who makes it, and where

Fattoria Uccelliera, in Crespina Lorenzana.

Made on the Pisan hills.

Two hundred and forty hectares between Crespina Lorenzana and Fauglia, twenty-one of them vineyard and olive grove.

“Uccelliera” is a medieval place name: it marked the hill where an old bird-catching stand once stood, a set-up for taking migrating birds. Today that same piece of hill does the opposite, and the arable land is farmed with the wildlife that passes through in mind.
