Designed, built and finished inside the workshop, in Tavarnelle Val di Pesa.

The piece

An oval a meter and a half by one, closed: the size it starts from, because the table extends. The 5040 chairs have carved and pierced backs and stand one hundred and eight centimeters off the ground, which is half as much again as the top: from the doorway you read the room by the chairs, not by the table.

Seventy-eight centimeters high at the top, forty-nine wide for each chair. An oval is the shape that costs most in the joinery — the perimeter rail has not a single straight stretch, it has to be built in segments and blended until the curve can no longer be felt under the hand. In exchange it has no corners, and you can pass around an oval without giving it a wide berth.

How it is made

The finish is the craft: lacquer and gold leaf are the two steps almost everyone subcontracts, and here they stay in house.

The workshop

L'ARTES

An art furniture workshop in Sambuca, founded in Firenze, in San Frediano, in 1968 by two young artisans trained by the masters of woodcarving. The whole cycle stays inside: the drawing, the unfinished piece, the lacquering, the decoration and the hand gilding. Three lines — Classico, Contemporary and Antica Firenze — and every piece built to the measurements of whoever orders it.
