The piece

A wide, flat frame, white, with a band carved with leaves at the center that runs along all four sides and knots at the corners. The silver sits only inside the carving: outside it the white stays clean, and the band reads as a dark line on the pale.

One hundred and five centimeters wide by eighty-five high: it sits wide, and that is the proportion of a mirror that goes above a piece of furniture and not on a bare wall. Laying silver inside a carving without dirtying the white around it is done with a fine brush and without hurrying — a smudge on a white ground cannot be covered, the whole field has to be done again.

How it is made

The finish is the craft: lacquer and gold leaf are the two steps almost everyone subcontracts, and here they stay in house.

The workshop

L'ARTES

An art furniture workshop in Sambuca, founded in Firenze, in San Frediano, in 1968 by two young artisans trained by the masters of woodcarving. The whole cycle stays inside: the drawing, the unfinished piece, the lacquering, the decoration and the hand gilding. Three lines — Classico, Contemporary and Antica Firenze — and every piece built to the measurements of whoever orders it.
