Designed, built and finished inside the workshop, in Tavarnelle Val di Pesa.

The piece

Forty-two centimeters a side and one meter thirteen high: a tall, narrow piece, with two drawers at the top and four legs that lengthen downwards as they curve. The ground is blue, and over it run the hand-painted trailing stems, pale, climbing the legs up to the body.

Painting on a curved leg means working without a surface to rest on: the brush follows a face that keeps moving away, and the stroke has to be held to the same width while the hand turns. The second photograph shows it being painted, and it is the shortest way to explain why no two pieces ever come out the same.

How it is made

The finish is the craft: lacquer and gold leaf are the two steps almost everyone subcontracts, and here they stay in house.

The workshop

L'ARTES

An art furniture workshop in Sambuca, founded in Firenze, in San Frediano, in 1968 by two young artisans trained by the masters of woodcarving. The whole cycle stays inside: the drawing, the unfinished piece, the lacquering, the decoration and the hand gilding. Three lines — Classico, Contemporary and Antica Firenze — and every piece built to the measurements of whoever orders it.
