The piece

The same idea as the 1627, turned vertical: a wide white frame, and inside it a band carved with close leaves, this time gone over in gold. The white field outside the band is wider than the one inside, and it serves to keep the design clear of the wall.

Eighty-five by one hundred and five. Turning a frame from horizontal to vertical is not rotating it: the pitch of the leaves has to be recalculated, because more of them fit on the long sides and at the corners the motif still has to close. The gold inside the carving warms the white without lighting it, which is the reason a frame like this works even in a room that is already pale.

How it is made

The finish is the craft: lacquer and gold leaf are the two steps almost everyone subcontracts, and here they stay in house.

The workshop

L'ARTES

An art furniture workshop in Sambuca, founded in Firenze, in San Frediano, in 1968 by two young artisans trained by the masters of woodcarving. The whole cycle stays inside: the drawing, the unfinished piece, the lacquering, the decoration and the hand gilding. Three lines — Classico, Contemporary and Antica Firenze — and every piece built to the measurements of whoever orders it.
