Designed, built and finished inside the workshop, in Tavarnelle Val di Pesa.

The piece

The frame is fretworked throughout: scrolls and cartouches that wind around and let the wall show through, with a cresting rising at the crown and two curls closing it below. The mirror inside is shaped and follows the outline, not a rectangle.

Seventy-eight by one hundred and ten. Fretwork allows no second attempt, because what is taken away does not come back; and on a frame that carries shaped glass every remaining solid is structure as well. The antiquing over the silver warms it and keeps it matt: in the undercuts it gathers by itself and draws the shadow that makes the relief readable.

How it is made

The finish is the craft: lacquer and gold leaf are the two steps almost everyone subcontracts, and here they stay in house.

The workshop

L'ARTES

An art furniture workshop in Sambuca, founded in Firenze, in San Frediano, in 1968 by two young artisans trained by the masters of woodcarving. The whole cycle stays inside: the drawing, the unfinished piece, the lacquering, the decoration and the hand gilding. Three lines — Classico, Contemporary and Antica Firenze — and every piece built to the measurements of whoever orders it.
