The piece

Fifty centimeters across and fifty-five high: taller than it is wide, which is the proportion of a side table. The legs are saber legs, they splay outwards and draw in at the foot; the apron under the top is shaped and carved at the center of each stretch.

A curved leg is not made by bending: it is cut from a thicker piece following the drawing, and everything outside the curve becomes waste. That is why a saber leg costs more than a straight one of the same length — and on a round table you need four identical ones, or the table rocks.

How it is made

The finish is the craft: lacquer and gold leaf are the two steps almost everyone subcontracts, and here they stay in house.

The workshop

L'ARTES

An art furniture workshop in Sambuca, founded in Firenze, in San Frediano, in 1968 by two young artisans trained by the masters of woodcarving. The whole cycle stays inside: the drawing, the unfinished piece, the lacquering, the decoration and the hand gilding. Three lines — Classico, Contemporary and Antica Firenze — and every piece built to the measurements of whoever orders it.
