The piece

The top is glass within a wooden frame, and at the center of the long band there is a single panel carved with leaves, dropping below the line of the piece. All the rest is plain: tapered legs with a square capital, and nothing else. When there is only one carving it has nowhere to hide, and it has to be centered to the millimeter on the middle line.

Four formats, two heights: fifty-six and forty-six. Ten centimeters of difference change what the table is for — at fifty-six you can reach it sitting up straight, at forty-six you only get to it by leaning out of the sofa. The glass over the painted band is there to show the wood while protecting it, and it is the reason the top of these tables is never solid.

How it is made

The finish is the craft: lacquer and gold leaf are the two steps almost everyone subcontracts, and here they stay in house.

The workshop

L'ARTES

An art furniture workshop in Sambuca, founded in Firenze, in San Frediano, in 1968 by two young artisans trained by the masters of woodcarving. The whole cycle stays inside: the drawing, the unfinished piece, the lacquering, the decoration and the hand gilding. Three lines — Classico, Contemporary and Antica Firenze — and every piece built to the measurements of whoever orders it.
