The piece

The frame is a single band, with no moldings and no relief: what moves it is the surface, grained by hand, which keeps the silver matt and makes it change according to where you stand. A profile like this adds nothing to the wall, and for that reason it is used where the wall is already worked.

The mirror has a ground edge, and the bevel catches the light before the glass does. The grained finish is a process done on the finished piece, over lacquer that is already dry: if you press in one spot you uncover the ground, and the ground under the silver is dark.

How it is made

The finish is the craft: lacquer and gold leaf are the two steps almost everyone subcontracts, and here they stay in house.

The workshop

L'ARTES

An art furniture workshop in Sambuca, founded in Firenze, in San Frediano, in 1968 by two young artisans trained by the masters of woodcarving. The whole cycle stays inside: the drawing, the unfinished piece, the lacquering, the decoration and the hand gilding. Three lines — Classico, Contemporary and Antica Firenze — and every piece built to the measurements of whoever orders it.
