Designed, built and finished inside the workshop, in Tavarnelle Val di Pesa.

The piece

The oval is plain: a wide hollow molding running down towards the mirror, without a single decoration. All the carving is at the crown, in a cresting of scrolls and leaves that opens out like a fan and then falls away on both sides until it meets the frame. It is the oldest way of composing a mirror: one part silent and one part that speaks, and a clean separation between the two.

Ninety centimeters wide by eighty-seven high, cresting included: the oval is therefore wider than it is tall, and hung it looks larger than it measures. The silver is antiqued, that is, oxidized on purpose after it is laid: it stays matt, and in the hollows of the carving it darkens by itself, which is what makes the relief legible.

How it is made

The finish is the craft: lacquer and gold leaf are the two steps almost everyone subcontracts, and here they stay in house.

The workshop

L'ARTES

An art furniture workshop in Sambuca, founded in Firenze, in San Frediano, in 1968 by two young artisans trained by the masters of woodcarving. The whole cycle stays inside: the drawing, the unfinished piece, the lacquering, the decoration and the hand gilding. Three lines — Classico, Contemporary and Antica Firenze — and every piece built to the measurements of whoever orders it.
