The piece

The frame is pierced right through: the wood is cut into a ribbon of volutes that coil around, and between one volute and the next you see the wall. A solid frame rests against the wall; this one takes it inside, and it changes color every time the room is repainted.

Piercing is the work that allows no second attempt: what is taken away does not come back, and around a perimeter of one meter sixty-four by one meter seven the solid parts left behind still have to carry the weight of the mirror. The mecca-glazed silver leaf darkens inside the voids and stays pale on the edges, and that is how the design reads instead of flattening out.

How it is made

The finish is the craft: lacquer and gold leaf are the two steps almost everyone subcontracts, and here they stay in house.

The workshop

L'ARTES

An art furniture workshop in Sambuca, founded in Firenze, in San Frediano, in 1968 by two young artisans trained by the masters of woodcarving. The whole cycle stays inside: the drawing, the unfinished piece, the lacquering, the decoration and the hand gilding. Three lines — Classico, Contemporary and Antica Firenze — and every piece built to the measurements of whoever orders it.
