Designed, built and finished inside the workshop, in Tavarnelle Val di Pesa.

The piece

The frame rises vertically, narrows at the top and closes with a carved cresting that is the highest part of the piece. At the bottom the profile rounds and draws back, so the mirror rests on the eye with a single shape instead of four corners.

Eighty centimeters wide by one hundred and fifteen high: narrow and tall, the proportion for someone with a short wall between two doors or between two wall lights. The gold comes out from under the white where the lacquer has been taken away, and it stays denser on the edges, which is where a frame really wears over the years.

How it is made

The finish is the craft: lacquer and gold leaf are the two steps almost everyone subcontracts, and here they stay in house.

The workshop

L'ARTES

An art furniture workshop in Sambuca, founded in Firenze, in San Frediano, in 1968 by two young artisans trained by the masters of woodcarving. The whole cycle stays inside: the drawing, the unfinished piece, the lacquering, the decoration and the hand gilding. Three lines — Classico, Contemporary and Antica Firenze — and every piece built to the measurements of whoever orders it.
