The piece

A meter fifty-two wide, and the frame is thin almost everywhere: the carving is concentrated in five places — the cresting at the top center, the four corner pieces — and between one and the next the profile goes back to being a thread. It is the opposite of a heavy frame, and in a light room you notice it for its outline, not for its mass.

A frame this thin between one carving and the next is also where it breaks: little wood is left, and it has to be chosen straight-grained or it will not hold the weight of the glass. The silver decapé is taken off the raised work and stays in the hollows, which is the way to show a carving without lighting it up.

How it is made

The finish is the craft: lacquer and gold leaf are the two steps almost everyone subcontracts, and here they stay in house.

The workshop

L'ARTES

An art furniture workshop in Sambuca, founded in Firenze, in San Frediano, in 1968 by two young artisans trained by the masters of woodcarving. The whole cycle stays inside: the drawing, the unfinished piece, the lacquering, the decoration and the hand gilding. Three lines — Classico, Contemporary and Antica Firenze — and every piece built to the measurements of whoever orders it.
