Designed, built and finished inside the workshop, in Tavarnelle Val di Pesa.

The piece

One frame, drawn twice: the 1572 sits wide, ninety-nine by seventy-nine, and is mocha with silver decoration; the 1573 sits tall, seventy-nine by ninety-nine, and is antique white with silver and mocha detailing. It is not the same piece turned round — the decoration has a direction, and on a rotated rectangle the scrolls would run the wrong way.

They are two finishes that behave in opposite ways: on the mocha the silver goes on top and stays in the light; on the antique white the mocha comes last and is there to make shadow. Same wood, same carving, and two pieces that in a room look nothing alike.

How it is made

The finish is the craft: lacquer and gold leaf are the two steps almost everyone subcontracts, and here they stay in house.

The workshop

L'ARTES

An art furniture workshop in Sambuca, founded in Firenze, in San Frediano, in 1968 by two young artisans trained by the masters of woodcarving. The whole cycle stays inside: the drawing, the unfinished piece, the lacquering, the decoration and the hand gilding. Three lines — Classico, Contemporary and Antica Firenze — and every piece built to the measurements of whoever orders it.
