The piece

A full oval, with no decoration on the molding, and two small bow carvings: one at the crown and one at the foot. They are the only points in relief, and they sit on the axis — which means they decide by themselves how it is to be hung. The mirror has a wide beveled edge, which on an oval is a piece of work in itself: the bevel follows a continuous curve and cannot be taken up again in sections.

The workshop makes it in two sizes, eighty-nine by ninety if it hangs wide and seventy-five by one hundred and four if it hangs tall: it is not the same piece turned round, they are two different ovals. The antique gold is a gilding brought down in tone, which sends back no reflections and lets the shape be read.

How it is made

The finish is the craft: lacquer and gold leaf are the two steps almost everyone subcontracts, and here they stay in house.

The workshop

L'ARTES

An art furniture workshop in Sambuca, founded in Firenze, in San Frediano, in 1968 by two young artisans trained by the masters of woodcarving. The whole cycle stays inside: the drawing, the unfinished piece, the lacquering, the decoration and the hand gilding. Three lines — Classico, Contemporary and Antica Firenze — and every piece built to the measurements of whoever orders it.
