Designed, built and finished inside the workshop, in Tavarnelle Val di Pesa.

The piece

Inside, a rectangle with beaded molding; outside, the carving that steps beyond the perimeter — the crest at the top, two volutes running down the sides, a scroll at the bottom. The frame itself stays simple, and the drawn part sits around it without touching the mirror. It is the way to make an important mirror without weighing down the glass: the weight sits at the edges, where the structure carries it.

Eighty-two centimeters wide by one meter thirty-one high. The beading is a row of small spheres worked one at a time: they are all identical until you get one wrong, and then people count them. The mecca-glazed silver leaves gray in the hollows and pale on the tips, which is exactly where it is needed to show that they are round.

How it is made

The finish is the craft: lacquer and gold leaf are the two steps almost everyone subcontracts, and here they stay in house.

The workshop

L'ARTES

An art furniture workshop in Sambuca, founded in Firenze, in San Frediano, in 1968 by two young artisans trained by the masters of woodcarving. The whole cycle stays inside: the drawing, the unfinished piece, the lacquering, the decoration and the hand gilding. Three lines — Classico, Contemporary and Antica Firenze — and every piece built to the measurements of whoever orders it.
