The piece

Four armchairs from the same family, and what changes is the back: one low and open, one with wings, one tall and bowed, one enveloping. Changing the back changes the job — a conversation chair and a reading chair do not have the same support behind the shoulders.

Finish and fabric are chosen, and on an armchair the choice weighs more than elsewhere: the same frame in a pale damask and in a dark velvet are two different pieces in a room. The wood stays the fixed point, and it is what you look at before deciding the rest.

How it is made

The finish is the craft: lacquer and gold leaf are the two steps almost everyone subcontracts, and here they stay in house.

The workshop

L'ARTES

An art furniture workshop in Sambuca, founded in Firenze, in San Frediano, in 1968 by two young artisans trained by the masters of woodcarving. The whole cycle stays inside: the drawing, the unfinished piece, the lacquering, the decoration and the hand gilding. Three lines — Classico, Contemporary and Antica Firenze — and every piece built to the measurements of whoever orders it.
