The piece

The upholstered top is the lid: it lifts, and the storage is underneath. The frame is shaped, with a hand-carved apron running round all four sides, and the legs are saber legs ending in a scroll foot.

One hundred and six centimeters long by forty-six deep, and fifty off the ground — the height of a seat, not of a chest. An upholstered lid that carries the weight of someone sitting on it has to be built on a rigid frame and not on the webbing alone: it is the difference between a bench that sags after a year and one that stays flat.

How it is made

The finish is the craft: lacquer and gold leaf are the two steps almost everyone subcontracts, and here they stay in house.

The workshop

L'ARTES

An art furniture workshop in Sambuca, founded in Firenze, in San Frediano, in 1968 by two young artisans trained by the masters of woodcarving. The whole cycle stays inside: the drawing, the unfinished piece, the lacquering, the decoration and the hand gilding. Three lines — Classico, Contemporary and Antica Firenze — and every piece built to the measurements of whoever orders it.
