The piece

The front is not painted: it is modeled. Across the two doors runs an interlace of volutes and figures in relief, pale on a dark ground, and the design passes from one door to the other without stopping at the meeting edge. Above, the top is Salomè marble, with the basin set into it.

Relief on a bathroom unit is a choice against the grain: the hollows hold damp, and have to be finished so the water runs off instead of standing. One hundred and seventy wide by sixty deep and ninety high — ninety is the height you can stand at without bending, and it is higher than a living-room piece for that reason.

How it is made

The finish is the craft: lacquer and gold leaf are the two steps almost everyone subcontracts, and here they stay in house.

The workshop

L'ARTES

An art furniture workshop in Sambuca, founded in Firenze, in San Frediano, in 1968 by two young artisans trained by the masters of woodcarving. The whole cycle stays inside: the drawing, the unfinished piece, the lacquering, the decoration and the hand gilding. Three lines — Classico, Contemporary and Antica Firenze — and every piece built to the measurements of whoever orders it.
