The piece

The headboard is an upholstered rectangle closed by a carved wooden frame: a continuous acanthus, finished in silver, that runs along all four sides and closes at the corners without the pattern breaking. Inside, the pale covering is cut into lozenges and sewn along the diagonals, so each panel takes the light at a different angle and the headboard does not read as a single surface.

The white is distressed mother-of-pearl: the color is laid on and then taken away with a rag until the ground shows through in patches. It is a finish done in one go — once it has set, what is left is what there is. The upholstery and the bed base are chosen afterwards: decorated wood, or an upholstered storage base.

How it is made

The finish is the craft: lacquer and gold leaf are the two steps almost everyone subcontracts, and here they stay in house.

The workshop

L'ARTES

An art furniture workshop in Sambuca, founded in Firenze, in San Frediano, in 1968 by two young artisans trained by the masters of woodcarving. The whole cycle stays inside: the drawing, the unfinished piece, the lacquering, the decoration and the hand gilding. Three lines — Classico, Contemporary and Antica Firenze — and every piece built to the measurements of whoever orders it.
