Designed, built and finished inside the workshop, in Tavarnelle Val di Pesa.

The piece

The headboard is shaped: it rises at the center, falls away at the sides and closes in two scrolls. Inside, the white buttoned upholstery is worked in diamonds, and the wooden frame that holds it is finished in antiqued silver leaf — narrow, without carving, so that what you look at stays the upholstery.

Buttoned upholstery inside a curved frame is the worst case for whoever does it: the grid of buttons is regular, the perimeter is not, and at the sides the diamond has to be closed off halfway without it showing where it ends. Two meters five by two meters five, one meter forty high at the crown of the headboard.

How it is made

The finish is the craft: lacquer and gold leaf are the two steps almost everyone subcontracts, and here they stay in house.

The workshop

L'ARTES

An art furniture workshop in Sambuca, founded in Firenze, in San Frediano, in 1968 by two young artisans trained by the masters of woodcarving. The whole cycle stays inside: the drawing, the unfinished piece, the lacquering, the decoration and the hand gilding. Three lines — Classico, Contemporary and Antica Firenze — and every piece built to the measurements of whoever orders it.
