Designed, built and finished inside the workshop, in Tavarnelle Val di Pesa.

The piece

The headboard is not divided into rows: it is cut into segments. A trapezoid central panel, two oblique wedges flanking it and two bands closing the sides — and the seams, picked out in gold, converge towards the center of the bed.

On upholstery, an oblique cut is harder than a straight one: fabric pulled on the diagonal works against the weave and tends to shift, and the gold line following the seam makes every millimeter of drift visible. The fabric is chosen, and it is what decides whether the pattern of the segments shows or stays barely hinted at.

How it is made

The finish is the craft: lacquer and gold leaf are the two steps almost everyone subcontracts, and here they stay in house.

The workshop

L'ARTES

An art furniture workshop in Sambuca, founded in Firenze, in San Frediano, in 1968 by two young artisans trained by the masters of woodcarving. The whole cycle stays inside: the drawing, the unfinished piece, the lacquering, the decoration and the hand gilding. Three lines — Classico, Contemporary and Antica Firenze — and every piece built to the measurements of whoever orders it.
