The piece

The frame is on show from every side: carved with volutes and pierced across the back, gilded in antique gold, and the upholstery sits inside it like a cushion inside a frame. The arms end in a curl that comes away from the seat, and below, the legs are saber legs.

An exposed frame forgives nothing: the joints are not covered by fabric, and every joint has to be made to be looked at. The piercing of the back takes wood away exactly where the sofa takes the push of anyone leaning on it, and that is why on a piece like this the thickness of the solid wood counts for more than the design.

How it is made

The finish is the craft: lacquer and gold leaf are the two steps almost everyone subcontracts, and here they stay in house.

The workshop

L'ARTES

An art furniture workshop in Sambuca, founded in Firenze, in San Frediano, in 1968 by two young artisans trained by the masters of woodcarving. The whole cycle stays inside: the drawing, the unfinished piece, the lacquering, the decoration and the hand gilding. Three lines — Classico, Contemporary and Antica Firenze — and every piece built to the measurements of whoever orders it.
