Designed, built and finished inside the workshop, in Tavarnelle Val di Pesa.

The piece

The front is taken up almost entirely by a hand-painted oval — a bunch of flowers on a light ground — and at either side two heavy scrolls run down from the top to the base. Inside those scrolls are the sides that open: they open sideways, and the shelves are behind them.

Opening at the side rather than the front is a choice that frees the whole front for the painting, and it costs in the joinery: the hinges work on a curved panel, and the weight of the scroll bears on them every time it is opened. One meter sixty-two wide by one meter sixteen high, sixty-six deep. Natural colors and waxes, which are gone over again rather than redone.

How it is made

The finish is the craft: lacquer and gold leaf are the two steps almost everyone subcontracts, and here they stay in house.

The workshop

L'ARTES

An art furniture workshop in Sambuca, founded in Firenze, in San Frediano, in 1968 by two young artisans trained by the masters of woodcarving. The whole cycle stays inside: the drawing, the unfinished piece, the lacquering, the decoration and the hand gilding.
