Designed, built and finished inside the workshop, in Tavarnelle Val di Pesa.

The piece

Four drawers, two rows, and a piece that reads entirely in horizontal lines: the pale bands of the drawers, and in the middle of each a close-grained band that picks up the light in small points. The handles are two facing scrolls, and they are the only curved mark on a front made only of straight lines.

One hundred and fifty by fifty, eighty high. Eighty is the height of a work surface, not of a dining-room sideboard: a piece at this height is used standing, and a vase goes on top without disappearing. On a gloss white lacquer there is no way to hide a fault — white is the color that shows everything, and it is also the hardest to lay evenly.

How it is made

The finish is the craft: lacquer and gold leaf are the two steps almost everyone subcontracts, and here they stay in house.

The workshop

L'ARTES

An art furniture workshop in Sambuca, founded in Firenze, in San Frediano, in 1968 by two young artisans trained by the masters of woodcarving. The whole cycle stays inside: the drawing, the unfinished piece, the lacquering, the decoration and the hand gilding. Three lines — Classico, Contemporary and Antica Firenze — and every piece built to the measurements of whoever orders it.
