Designed, built and finished inside the workshop, in Tavarnelle Val di Pesa.

The piece

The front is ribbed along its whole length with close vertical slats, dark bronze, and at the center the two doors open into a lighter field with a gilded lozenge in the middle. Everything else is dark: the only light is taken by that lozenge and by the rib of each slat.

A shaded finish on a slatted surface is harder than on a flat one: the color has to be carried from the ground to the rib without it showing where one slat ends and the next begins, and over a meter eighty the slats run to dozens. Fifty-two deep, eighty-five high, and the piece stands on slender legs that lift it off the floor.

How it is made

The finish is the craft: lacquer and gold leaf are the two steps almost everyone subcontracts, and here they stay in house.

The workshop

L'ARTES

An art furniture workshop in Sambuca, founded in Firenze, in San Frediano, in 1968 by two young artisans trained by the masters of woodcarving. The whole cycle stays inside: the drawing, the unfinished piece, the lacquering, the decoration and the hand gilding. Three lines — Classico, Contemporary and Antica Firenze — and every piece built to the measurements of whoever orders it.
