The piece

One meter eighty of smooth front, with no handles in view, and at the center a single cartouche carving marking where the piece opens. The top is thin and projects barely at all; below, four tall, tapered legs hold the body clear of the floor.

The rolled finish is a glaze applied with a roller over the lacquer: it leaves a fine, even grain that on white is seen only obliquely, when the light comes in raking. Fifty-two centimeters deep and eighty-five high — the height of a side surface, not of a dining-room sideboard.

How it is made

The finish is the craft: lacquer and gold leaf are the two steps almost everyone subcontracts, and here they stay in house.

The workshop

L'ARTES

An art furniture workshop in Sambuca, founded in Firenze, in San Frediano, in 1968 by two young artisans trained by the masters of woodcarving. The whole cycle stays inside: the drawing, the unfinished piece, the lacquering, the decoration and the hand gilding. Three lines — Classico, Contemporary and Antica Firenze — and every piece built to the measurements of whoever orders it.
