The piece

Two meters eight of front, divided into squared fields: four doors below, a row of drawers above, and in each field a hand-painted scroll that opens from the bottom and closes at the top. There is a single tone, light on light, and what separates the fields is the shadow of the molding.

Painting light on light leaves no margin at all: the decoration only shows through the difference in glaze, and one coat heavier than the next breaks the sequence along the whole length. The beeswax closes the surface without polishing it, and over the years it is gone over again — which is why the workshop uses it instead of varnish. Fifty-five deep, a meter sixteen high.

How it is made

The finish is the craft: lacquer and gold leaf are the two steps almost everyone subcontracts, and here they stay in house.

The workshop

L'ARTES

An art furniture workshop in Sambuca, founded in Firenze, in San Frediano, in 1968 by two young artisans trained by the masters of woodcarving. The whole cycle stays inside: the drawing, the unfinished piece, the lacquering, the decoration and the hand gilding. Three lines — Classico, Contemporary and Antica Firenze — and every piece built to the measurements of whoever orders it.
