The piece

A tall, narrow piece, a single door, thirty-eight centimeters deep: the measure of an entrance hall, where there is never any room. On the door the decoration is painted vertically, a slender stem that rises from the bottom and opens out halfway up, lengthening the piece instead of cutting it.

The inside is decided beforehand: four shelves if boxes are going in, or a single shelf and four knobs if coats are. They are two different pieces with the same front, and the choice has to be made when ordering because the internal rails carry the structure. One meter wide by one meter ninety-five high.

How it is made

The finish is the craft: lacquer and gold leaf are the two steps almost everyone subcontracts, and here they stay in house.

The workshop

L'ARTES

An art furniture workshop in Sambuca, founded in Firenze, in San Frediano, in 1968 by two young artisans trained by the masters of woodcarving. The whole cycle stays inside: the drawing, the unfinished piece, the lacquering, the decoration and the hand gilding. Three lines — Classico, Contemporary and Antica Firenze — and every piece built to the measurements of whoever orders it.
