Designed, built and finished inside the workshop, in Tavarnelle Val di Pesa.

The piece

Each door is divided in two: above, a bronze mirror inside a frame; below, a pearled oak panel with laser-cut carving finished in oxidized silver. A darkened mirror does not give the room back whole: it returns it a tone lower, and that is why a front of almost three meters does not double the bedroom.

Here the carving is done by the laser, and the hand comes afterwards: the cut comes out clean and even, but it is the oxidized silver laid on and then wiped back that decides how deep it looks. Two meters ninety-three by two meters fifty-six, seventy-two deep. A mirror on a sliding door adds weight to the carriage, which is why on these doors the track has to be sized in advance.

How it is made

The finish is the craft: lacquer and gold leaf are the two steps almost everyone subcontracts, and here they stay in house.

The workshop

L'ARTES

An art furniture workshop in Sambuca, founded in Firenze, in San Frediano, in 1968 by two young artisans trained by the masters of woodcarving. The whole cycle stays inside: the drawing, the unfinished piece, the lacquering, the decoration and the hand gilding. Three lines — Classico, Contemporary and Antica Firenze — and every piece built to the measurements of whoever orders it.
