The piece

The front is almost entirely flat, lacquered hemp, with no frames and no visible handles. The one place where anything happens is a low band of bronze mirror, and inside the band a carved oval finished in oxidized silver: a single piece of decoration across two meters ninety of width.

A wide, flat surface is the hardest test for a lacquer, because there is no relief to hide a speck of dust or a spray pass given twice. Two meters fifty-one high by seventy-five deep. It is the same design as display cabinet 862, and that is how a collection holds together: a detail that comes back on pieces for different rooms.

How it is made

The finish is the craft: lacquer and gold leaf are the two steps almost everyone subcontracts, and here they stay in house.

The workshop

L'ARTES

An art furniture workshop in Sambuca, founded in Firenze, in San Frediano, in 1968 by two young artisans trained by the masters of woodcarving. The whole cycle stays inside: the drawing, the unfinished piece, the lacquering, the decoration and the hand gilding. Three lines — Classico, Contemporary and Antica Firenze — and every piece built to the measurements of whoever orders it.
