The piece

Two doors that slide one in front of the other, and on each a thin panel with four painted posies at the corners. The center stays empty: on a sliding door that is the right choice, because half the front is always covered by the other half and a central decoration would disappear at every opening.

A slider has no hinges: the whole weight of the door is on a carriage and a track, and the door is as big as half the wardrobe. The difference between a slider that lasts and one that drags after two years is decided there, not in the finish. The ivory is even over the whole front, and on a surface that wide it is the proof that the lacquer was laid in a single pass.

How it is made

The finish is the craft: lacquer and gold leaf are the two steps almost everyone subcontracts, and here they stay in house.

The workshop

L'ARTES

An art furniture workshop in Sambuca, founded in Firenze, in San Frediano, in 1968 by two young artisans trained by the masters of woodcarving. The whole cycle stays inside: the drawing, the unfinished piece, the lacquering, the decoration and the hand gilding. Three lines — Classico, Contemporary and Antica Firenze — and every piece built to the measurements of whoever orders it.
