Designed, built and finished inside the workshop, in Tavarnelle Val di Pesa.

The piece

Three meters four wide, and two different finishes on the same piece: the outer body is brushed white over a mother-of-pearl ground, with umber and silver decoration; the inside of the doors is rag-worked white. Whoever opens it every day sees the second one, not the first.

Finishing the inside too is the part nobody sees in a photograph and everybody feels by hand. Two meters sixty high by seventy-five deep: the depth of a sliding wardrobe has to be worked out by adding the thickness of the doors that run in front of the carcase, and it is those five or six extra centimeters that decide whether a hanger sits straight or crooked.

How it is made

The finish is the craft: lacquer and gold leaf are the two steps almost everyone subcontracts, and here they stay in house.

The workshop

L'ARTES

An art furniture workshop in Sambuca, founded in Firenze, in San Frediano, in 1968 by two young artisans trained by the masters of woodcarving. The whole cycle stays inside: the drawing, the unfinished piece, the lacquering, the decoration and the hand gilding. Three lines — Classico, Contemporary and Antica Firenze — and every piece built to the measurements of whoever orders it.
