The piece

Three doors, and the middle one does two jobs: it slides like the others, and it opens on hinges. Inside, on the back of the door, is the mirror — which stays hidden until it is wanted, and does not reflect the bedroom all day long.

Making a sliding door and a hinged door live together on the same leaf is a problem of thicknesses: the door has to sit on the runner and at the same time carry a hinge, and when it is opened on its hinges it projects from the face of the wardrobe by its whole width. Three meters four across the front, eighty-two deep — ten more than an ordinary sliding wardrobe, and those are the ten the opening door takes away.

How it is made

The finish is the craft: lacquer and gold leaf are the two steps almost everyone subcontracts, and here they stay in house.

The workshop

L'ARTES

An art furniture workshop in Sambuca, founded in Firenze, in San Frediano, in 1968 by two young artisans trained by the masters of woodcarving. The whole cycle stays inside: the drawing, the unfinished piece, the lacquering, the decoration and the hand gilding. Three lines — Classico, Contemporary and Antica Firenze — and every piece built to the measurements of whoever orders it.
