The piece

No decoration: only the moldings that panel the doors and a solid cornice closing the piece at the top. Brocantage white is a lacquer worn back on purpose, paler on the edges and heavier in the hollows, like a piece that has already been through a few house moves.

With no decoration there is nothing left to hide behind: the only thing anyone looks at is whether the moldings are in line and whether the doors close with the same gap. Two meters eighty wide by two meters sixty high, sixty-six deep — sixty-six because the shoulder of a hanger is fifty-five long and it needs air behind and in front.

How it is made

The finish is the craft: lacquer and gold leaf are the two steps almost everyone subcontracts, and here they stay in house.

The workshop

L'ARTES

An art furniture workshop in Sambuca, founded in Firenze, in San Frediano, in 1968 by two young artisans trained by the masters of woodcarving. The whole cycle stays inside: the drawing, the unfinished piece, the lacquering, the decoration and the hand gilding. Three lines — Classico, Contemporary and Antica Firenze — and every piece built to the measurements of whoever orders it.
