Designed, built and finished inside the workshop, in Tavarnelle Val di Pesa.

The piece

Two meters eighty wide by two meters fifty-six high: a wardrobe this size does not stand against a wall, it takes the whole of it. The ground is ivory, and over it goes the sponged mother-of-pearl — a wash laid on with a pad, not a brush, which leaves the texture irregular and changes with the light it catches. At the corners of the doors the decoration is painted by hand, fine, and does not reach the center: the door stays plain.

Sponging is a finish that cannot be corrected cold: color has to be taken away or added while it is still wet, and across a front of almost three meters the hand has to stay the same from the first corner to the last. Sixty-five centimeters deep, which is the right measurement for a hanger to sit straight and not at an angle.

How it is made

The finish is the craft: lacquer and gold leaf are the two steps almost everyone subcontracts, and here they stay in house.

The workshop

L'ARTES

An art furniture workshop in Sambuca, founded in Firenze, in San Frediano, in 1968 by two young artisans trained by the masters of woodcarving. The whole cycle stays inside: the drawing, the unfinished piece, the lacquering, the decoration and the hand gilding. Three lines — Classico, Contemporary and Antica Firenze — and every piece built to the measurements of whoever orders it.
