Collection Creazioni in Argento·Anello·Owl's head on the front of the ring, plumage down the shank
Twelve grams twenty of silver, and two round blue topazes in place of the eyes.
Drawn and built by hand at the bench, in Tosi.
The eyes are two round blue topazes, faceted, and they take up almost the whole face: from the front you see them first and the owl second. They sit inside a raised silver circle, with the tabs beaten over the outline of the stone, and the ground of the seat is black with oxidizing — the metal there does not reflect, and the blue comes back up on its own. It is a pale, cold blue, the same tone on both, and it changes with the light: in the sun it catches fire on the facets, in the shade it stays a still color. Around them, the plumage engraved with the burin runs outwards and never enters the eye: the mark stops at the edge of the setting. Above, the two tufts rise and are polished back; below, the plumage narrows down to the smooth band that goes round the finger.
Twelve grams twenty of silver at nine hundred and twenty-five thousandths: here the plumage is solid, not pierced, and the weight tells in the hand. The carat weight of the two topazes is not stated by the company, and we do not add it. There is one thing worth knowing about topaz, and it is the thing that decides how it is worn: it cleaves along a clean plane parallel to the base, so a knock in the wrong direction does not chip a corner, it opens the stone in two. On an everyday ring that means taking it off before working with your hands, and not letting anyone tap it back into its seat.
Weights and carats as the workshop declares them.
The eyes, one on each side
The words of the trade, one by one, explained to those who do not know them.
I don't look at what others are doing: I would rather create in my own style. That is what makes our jewelry recognizable.
Fabio Gori — Anna Gioielli, Tosi
Every ring is made to the size of the person who will wear it: we settle it together before work begins.
The goldsmith's workshop is also the place where made-to-measure jewellery is created and family pieces are restored: if you have an idea, or something you want brought back to how it was, that is where it starts.
A goldsmith's workshop in Tosi, on the slopes of the Pratomagno: Anna opened it in 1988, her sons Fabio and Francesco carry it on. Piercing, repoussé, chasing and burin engraving — the Florentine school, with the workshop in full view of the shop.
