A square cushion, swollen on both faces and pierced in a regular mesh. Over the mesh run four raised ribs going from the corners to the center, and at the center a diamond sits in a closed round setting. The chain does not hook to a small ring above the pendant: it passes through two yellow gold tubes soldered at the top corners, one on each side.

Five grams of eighteen-carat gold. At the center a natural brilliant-cut diamond of twenty-one points; on the ribs and the mesh, further diamonds for thirty-three points. Behind, the cushion is open and the hallmark is visible: here the piercing is not an ornament on the face, it is the structure that holds up all the rest.

How it is made

The words of the trade, one by one, explained to those who do not know them.

Openwork: The metal is drilled and then cut from the inside with a very fine piercing saw, until the solid sheet becomes a design of voids. It is a technique that allows no second attempt: what is taken away does not come back.
Mesh work: The piercing does not make a single hole: it makes a regular mesh of them, and every mesh has to carry the weight of the others. Getting one cut wrong means weakening the whole net.
Burin engraving: The burin is a goldsmith's graver pushed by hand. It does not scratch: it lifts a chip of metal and leaves a clean groove that catches the light. It is the mark that for five centuries has distinguished the Florentine goldsmith's school.
Two golds on the same piece: White and yellow have different hardnesses and soldering temperatures: mounting them together means working two metals that do not react the same way under the flame, and making them meet without the joint showing.
Chain running through: The chain does not hook to a small ring above the pendant: it goes through two tubes soldered at the top corners, and the pendant runs along it. The two tubes have to be on the same axis and have the same internal passage, so that the link runs without forcing; if one is left out of square the pendant sits crooked on the neck, and afterwards it cannot be straightened, because the solder is already inside the piercing.
Brilliant cut: Fifty-seven facets calculated so that the light entering from above comes back from the same side. It is the cut that makes a diamond sparkle, and the reason a badly cut diamond stays dull.

I don't look at what others are doing: I would rather create in my own style. That is what makes our jewelry recognizable.
