Collection Marte·Pendente

Marte pendant in gold with baroque Tahitian pearl with bronze-green reflections and diamond

Seventeen millimeters wide, and it is almost all pearl: a Tahitian baroque, gray from birth.

€1.350,00 P632bp/2

Drawn and built by hand at the bench, in Tosi.

The pearl is the large part: a Tahitian baroque as wide as the whole pendant, with an irregular outline — one side barely flattened, a low fold turning around the body. The gray is warm, dark bronze at the center, and along the side and towards the bottom run flashes of green and pink. Above it is held by a yellow gold cap of irregular relief and voids, modeled on the surface of Mars — craters and hollows — which is the design of the whole collection, and its arms run down the shoulders of the pearl without projecting at the sides. In the cap, off center, sits a single brilliant-cut diamond. The chain in the photographs is not included: what is sold is the pendant.

Twenty-six millimeters high by seventeen wide, and the width is almost all pearl: the gold sits above it, not beside it. Four grams and thirty of eighteen-carat gold, and five hundredths of a carat of diamond. The gray is not a treatment: the mother-of-pearl comes out of the Tahitian oyster like that already. And the shape came out like that too — a baroque is not turned, that outline is what the oyster laid down layer upon layer, and no second one the same will be found. Mother-of-pearl is soft, it scratches with a fingernail: it must be kept away from perfume and hairspray, and put away dry.

How it is made

The words of the trade, one by one, explained to those who do not know them.

Tahitian pearl
The pearl is the only gem produced by a living animal. It is not a crystal grown in the rock: it is mother-of-pearl, which the oyster lays down in very thin layers around a nucleus, one on top of another for years, and the light seen at the surface is the sum of those layers. The gray of the Tahitians is theirs from birth: it comes from Pinctada margaritifera, the black-lipped oyster, and it is not a dye. But mother-of-pearl is soft: it scratches with a fingernail, and perfume, hairspray, vinegar and sweat corrode the surface until the luster goes out. It is put away dry, and never shut in a bag where no air passes.
Baroque pearl
Baroque means that the pearl is not round, and that it has not been made round: the mother-of-pearl settled around a nucleus that had shifted, and every layer repeated the offset of the one before, until the body grew with its own humps and folds. A round one can be discarded and replaced with another of the same size; a baroque cannot, there is no second one with the same outline. Whoever mounts it is therefore working on a unique piece: the seat has to be fitted by hand to that shape, and forcing it chips the mother-of-pearl, which above the nucleus is a few tenths of a millimeter thick.
Brilliant cut
Fifty-seven facets calculated so that light entering from above comes back out the same side. It is the cut that makes a diamond sparkle, and the reason a badly cut diamond stays dull.

I don't look at what others are doing: I would rather create in my own style. That is what makes our jewelry recognizable.

Made for you

Every piece leaves the bench made to order: sizes and details are agreed before the work begins.

The goldsmith's workshop is also the place where made-to-measure jewellery is created and family pieces are restored: if you have an idea, or something you want brought back to how it was, that is where it starts.
