Designed, built and finished inside the workshop, in Tavarnelle Val di Pesa.

The piece

Two materials on the same piece: the body is lacquered hemp, the band at the bottom is oak left natural, with the grain showing. Between them, an oval carved in oxidized silver — the only raised point on the whole piece. Above, two glazed doors with no glazing bars, which leave the contents entirely in view.

Putting a lacquer next to a natural wood is harder than lacquering everything: the oak stays alive, that is, it goes on moving with the humidity, while the lacquered part is sealed. The joint between the two has to be left free to work, or after one winter a crack opens. One meter seventy by two ten high, and it dismantles.

How it is made

The finish is the craft: lacquer and gold leaf are the two steps almost everyone subcontracts, and here they stay in house.

The workshop

L'ARTES

An art furniture workshop in Sambuca, founded in Firenze, in San Frediano, in 1968 by two young artisans trained by the masters of woodcarving. The whole cycle stays inside: the drawing, the unfinished piece, the lacquering, the decoration and the hand gilding. Three lines — Classico, Contemporary and Antica Firenze — and every piece built to the measurements of whoever orders it.
