The piece

One meter ninety-five high and thirty-eight deep: a narrow display cabinet, with the uprights chamfered at the corners and the glass running round three sides. The shelves are glass, and the light sits at the top inside the cornice. Switched on, it cuts through the dark at the back instead of flattening what stands on the shelves — which is, after all, the only reason for putting a light in a display cabinet.

The decoration is hand-painted on the uprights and on the apron, natural colors on a light ground. Thirty-eight centimeters of depth is not much, and it means the piece goes in a corridor or against a wall that is already taken: it is the measurement that lets you put it where an ordinary cabinet would not fit.

How it is made

The finish is the craft: lacquer and gold leaf are the two steps almost everyone subcontracts, and here they stay in house.

The workshop

L'ARTES

An art furniture workshop in Sambuca, founded in Firenze, in San Frediano, in 1968 by two young artisans trained by the masters of woodcarving. The whole cycle stays inside: the drawing, the unfinished piece, the lacquering, the decoration and the hand gilding. Three lines — Classico, Contemporary and Antica Firenze — and every piece built to the measurements of whoever orders it.
