Designed, built and finished inside the workshop, in Tavarnelle Val di Pesa.

The piece

Thirty centimeters high: a low table that sits below the line of the sofa, and so is looked at from above rather than head on. The legs are turned solid, four broad columns, and they carry a top far larger than themselves — one hundred and twenty by seventy-five, or one hundred and forty by one hundred and forty in the square version.

It comes apart, and on a piece this wide that is not a detail: a top of one meter forty will not go through an ordinary door assembled. Turning is work done in one go, with the wood spinning: the profile is decided by the hand pushing the chisel, and four legs have to come out identical one after another.

How it is made

The finish is the craft: lacquer and gold leaf are the two steps almost everyone subcontracts, and here they stay in house.

The workshop

L'ARTES

An art furniture workshop in Sambuca, founded in Firenze, in San Frediano, in 1968 by two young artisans trained by the masters of woodcarving. The whole cycle stays inside: the drawing, the unfinished piece, the lacquering, the decoration and the hand gilding. Three lines — Classico, Contemporary and Antica Firenze — and every piece built to the measurements of whoever orders it.
