The piece

Around the edge of the top runs a carved rope molding, like a twisted cable, and beneath the apron a drawer opens with a round knob. The legs are fluted and tapered, with a block foot. A drawer in a coffee table is the thing you notice afterwards, and then use every day.

One hundred and seventeen by sixty-seven, forty-six high. The rope molding is carved on the round and has to keep the same pitch all the way round the perimeter: at the corners the rhythm has to be calculated beforehand, because a cable that breaks off is visible. The gold distressing leaves the white in the recesses and the gold on the raised work, which here means precisely on the twist.

How it is made

The finish is the craft: lacquer and gold leaf are the two steps almost everyone subcontracts, and here they stay in house.

The workshop

L'ARTES

An art furniture workshop in Sambuca, founded in Firenze, in San Frediano, in 1968 by two young artisans trained by the masters of woodcarving. The whole cycle stays inside: the drawing, the unfinished piece, the lacquering, the decoration and the hand gilding. Three lines — Classico, Contemporary and Antica Firenze — and every piece built to the measurements of whoever orders it.
