Designed, built and finished inside the workshop, in Tavarnelle Val di Pesa.

The piece

The ground is pale green and the gilded decoration runs along the band in a festoon that widens at the center and thins towards the corners. The top is glass inside the frame, and under the glass the green continues: it is the color, not the carving, that makes the piece.

A colored ground is harder to keep even than white lacquer, because every pass of glaze shifts the tone, and over sixty-seven centimeters of band a difference reads at once. The gold over the green has to be laid with a fine brush and allows no retouching: over color, the second pass always shows.

How it is made

The finish is the craft: lacquer and gold leaf are the two steps almost everyone subcontracts, and here they stay in house.

The workshop

L'ARTES

An art furniture workshop in Sambuca, founded in Firenze, in San Frediano, in 1968 by two young artisans trained by the masters of woodcarving. The whole cycle stays inside: the drawing, the unfinished piece, the lacquering, the decoration and the hand gilding. Three lines — Classico, Contemporary and Antica Firenze — and every piece built to the measurements of whoever orders it.
