The piece

The top is glass, set into a wooden frame: under the glass you can see the painted apron, and at the center of the long side a cartouche carving projects beyond the line of the piece. The legs are turned and fluted, with a square capital at the top and a narrow foot.

The same design comes in four sizes, two square and two long, and in two heights — sixty-five and forty-eight — which are the height of a side table and that of a table beside a sofa. Changing the height is not a matter of shortening the leg: the fluting and the capital have to stay in proportion, or the same leg at forty-eight looks squat.

How it is made

The finish is the craft: lacquer and gold leaf are the two steps almost everyone subcontracts, and here they stay in house.

The workshop

L'ARTES

An art furniture workshop in Sambuca, founded in Firenze, in San Frediano, in 1968 by two young artisans trained by the masters of woodcarving. The whole cycle stays inside: the drawing, the unfinished piece, the lacquering, the decoration and the hand gilding. Three lines — Classico, Contemporary and Antica Firenze — and every piece built to the measurements of whoever orders it.
