Designed, built and finished inside the workshop, in Tavarnelle Val di Pesa.

The piece

There is not one frame: there are two, one inside the other. The outer one is wide and flat and stops at a thin fillet; the inner one rises and brings the eye back towards the mirror. Between them a step of shadow is left, and that is what gives depth to a frame that is otherwise low.

Ninety-six centimeters wide by one hundred and five high: almost a square, which is the proportion a mirror takes when it has to sit above a piece of furniture and not stretch the wall. The gold is laid on by hand and stays faintly streaked, so the light does not bounce off it all at once but breaks along the grain.

How it is made

The finish is the craft: lacquer and gold leaf are the two steps almost everyone subcontracts, and here they stay in house.

The workshop

L'ARTES

An art furniture workshop in Sambuca, founded in Firenze, in San Frediano, in 1968 by two young artisans trained by the masters of woodcarving. The whole cycle stays inside: the drawing, the unfinished piece, the lacquering, the decoration and the hand gilding. Three lines — Classico, Contemporary and Antica Firenze — and every piece built to the measurements of whoever orders it.
