Designed, built and finished inside the workshop, in Tavarnelle Val di Pesa.

The piece

Between two plain fillets runs a plaited band, carved into the wood and repeated identically on all four sides. At the corners the pattern has to close on the diagonal without skipping a step: it is the one place where a plait can go wrong, and it shows from across the room.

A meter sixty by a meter ten are the measurements of a full wall mirror, not of something to stand on a cabinet. The decapé is done by lacquering white and then taking the color off the raised work until the gold reappears underneath: you remove, you do not add, and where too much has come off there is no putting it back on.

How it is made

The finish is the craft: lacquer and gold leaf are the two steps almost everyone subcontracts, and here they stay in house.

The workshop

L'ARTES

An art furniture workshop in Sambuca, founded in Firenze, in San Frediano, in 1968 by two young artisans trained by the masters of woodcarving. The whole cycle stays inside: the drawing, the unfinished piece, the lacquering, the decoration and the hand gilding. Three lines — Classico, Contemporary and Antica Firenze — and every piece built to the measurements of whoever orders it.
