The piece

The oval is a wide, full hollow molding, lacquered mocha, and on it sit a few posies of flowers painted in gold: two at the top on either side, two below. The rest of the frame stays dark and empty. It is a choice you can see from a distance — the decoration does not run all the way round, and for that reason you read it as a design and not as a border.

Eighty centimeters by one meter. The mocha ground is a dark lacquer, and on a dark lacquer the gold goes on last, with a fine brush: there is no way to correct a stroke, because going over it on top of the mocha leaves it dirty. Whoever paints decides on the branch and finishes it.

How it is made

The finish is the craft: lacquer and gold leaf are the two steps almost everyone subcontracts, and here they stay in house.

The workshop

L'ARTES

An art furniture workshop in Sambuca, founded in Firenze, in San Frediano, in 1968 by two young artisans trained by the masters of woodcarving. The whole cycle stays inside: the drawing, the unfinished piece, the lacquering, the decoration and the hand gilding. Three lines — Classico, Contemporary and Antica Firenze — and every piece built to the measurements of whoever orders it.
